A year later, Winston Churchill writes his Minister of Food, Lord Woolton, on the eating lessons that he found on the second day of March, 1941.  In his letter, Churchill admonishes the minister on his provision of food stuffs allowed to be eaten, although these were only his "personal views", but some which could be easily observed.
I still think that from the point of view of economy it would be better to allow and even encourage in the restaurants the eating up of scraps of all kinds through these being well and tastily cooked, rather than to compel people to plump for the solid simple dishes.
When a person has the choice of having a piece of cheese or a side of roast beef, most will choose the latter.  They [sic] way not to get fish eaten is to put it into competition with game or meat.
I should also have thought that an exhortation not to leave anything on the plate, and to take small portions with, if necessary, a second helping, would be a wise step. However these are only my personal views.

I see that my good friend, Richard Langworth, is publishing yet another epic on Winston Churchill, this one entitled Winston Churchill, Myth and Reality: What he Actually Did and Said.  A great book, this one explores and destroys the many myths and hyperboles that have grown up about Churchill, his life and his times.  Go to https://richardlangworth.com/winston-churchill-myth-and-reality to learn more about this great book.

It seems to me that beginning an account of Winston Churchill's life and times would not hurt.  Thus, I will begin today with excising certain elements from his life that will be highlighted in each issue's current status.  Correct me if wrong; suggest others that are appropriate.  Your input is always requested.

Current input comes from Sir Martin Gilbert's Volume I of his Churchill War Papers: At the Admiralty.  In the future, I may refer elsewhere, but edits from his war years seem to be the best place to get started.

In a message to Admirals Pound and Fraser, Churchill (then the Prime Minister) wrote on March 1, 1940:
"[Admiral James A. Gardiner Troup, the Admiral at Glasgow] could tell them [the workers] that the change of plan was due to the Russian attitude; but I am anxious to know how much work has actually to be undone.  Let me have a report on this.  Each ship must be kept in a condition in which they can be ready at reasonable notice for the enterprise, and meanwhile trade as well as they can."

A new speaking post.

Look for Daniel Myers speaking on Winston S. Churchill at the Senior Lunch Special of the Hinsdale Covenant center on April 11, 2017.  This speech, to a group of about 35 participants, is part of my series of talks to retirement communities and similar organizations.  Some new material related to his connections to Scotland have been added.

Paul Allen is the leader of the group and will organize this event.

Look for free speakers at FreeSpeakers.org, a pro bono speakers bureau that provides new and unique speakers on all subjects of interest.  Requesting a speaker on FreeSpeakers.org website is free and all speakers present for free.  Go to http://chicago.freespeakers.org to view the list of speakers and topics.

As usual, I am always prepared to give my speeches on Winston S. Churchill at a moment's notice and would appreciate the time and publicity I receive from my talks.  For retirement communities, libraries and similar organizations, my 50 minute talk with slides is usually best.  For Rotary, Lions, Kiwanis and similar clubs, I can present a 15 to 20 minute talk designed to fit your needs.  Give me a call now and lets discuss your concerns.  My number is 1-630-512-9341.
